Waite was awarded the (Distinguished Service Cross) for actions on 8 April1972 for his part of a rescue of 3 Americans escaping from Loc Ninh.The aircraft flown by Cpt John Whitehead had 9 folks on it on take off. Whitehead and one ARVN were on the right side. 7 were all over the back. Waite and an American Advisor(LTC) were outside the aircraft on this side. Waite was held in by his monkey strap and was holding the LTC around the waist. Waite had on a gas mask as did Whitehead. Two Americans, one CPT and one MSG were laying on the floor with 3 ARVN laying on top of them. The MSG was hit and the arm and eventually lost his hand.
